A song that denounces and protests against unfairness and injustice in society. Generally used in the field of American folk songs. Folk songs that have been sung by the people since ancient times often contain songs that express antipathy toward those in power, but protest songs are primarily songs written by modern composers such as Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs (1940-76) as a means of conveying political opinions. In that sense, the term "message song" is used almost synonymously. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
