A city in the mid-west of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is the administrative capital of Bareilly district. It is located about 220 km east of Delhi, deep in the Ganges plain, on the Ramganga tributary. It is a strategic location on the land route north of the Ganges. It was founded in 1537 and later became the royal capital of the Rohilla people under the Mughal Empire. It came under British rule in 1801, and during the Indian Rebellion, a local government was established and it became a base for anti-British struggle. Industries include sugar, chemicals, matches, cotton textiles, and furniture. There are numerous mosques (16th and 17th centuries), the palace of the Nawab of Rampur, and Buddhist ruins from the time of King Ashoka. Population: 583,437 (1991).
