[Indian Mythology and the Himalayas]
The word "Himalaya" is a compound word of the Sanskrit words hima (snow) and ālaya (dwelling place), and means "house of snow," but it is also called "snow mountain" (Himagiri, Himakuta, Himadri, Himachala). Himavat (meaning "mountain with snow") is also the name of the mountain god. The Himalayas, also called "King of the Mountains" (Giriraj, Girisha), are closely related to Indian mythology, legends, and literature, and gods and sages have some kind of connection with this mountain.
