Baikal [Lake] - Baikal
A freshwater fault lake in eastern Siberia, in south-central Russia. The lake surface is 456m above sea level. It stretches 636km from northeast to southwest, with an average width of 48km, and an area of 31,500km2 . Its maximum depth is 1,741m (the deepest in the world). Most of the shores of the lake are cliffs, and the largest island is Olkhon Island. More than 330 rivers, large and small, including the Selenga River, flow into it, and the only outflow is the Angara River. It freezes over from 1 to 5 months. Many endemic species, including the viviparous fish Goremyanka and the Baikal seal, live here. Omuls and other fish are caught here. Irkutsk is on the shore of the lake, and there is a limnological research institute in Listvyanka. The lake was once very clear, but since 1960 environmental pollution has progressed, and in 1969 the Soviet government enacted a special law on environmental protection. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
