A freshwater fault lake in eastern Siberia, in south-central Russia. The lake surface is 456m above sea level. It stretches 636km from northeast to southwest, with an average width of 48km, and an area of ^31,500km2 . Its maximum depth is 1,741m (the deepest in the world). Most of the shores of the lake are cliffs, and the largest island is Olkhon Island. More than 330 rivers, large and small, including the Selenga River, flow into it, and the only outflow is the Angara River. It freezes over from 1 to 5 months. Many endemic species, including the viviparous fish Goremyanka and the Baikal seal, live here. Omuls and other fish are caught here. Irkutsk is on the shore of the lake, and there is a limnological research institute in Listvyanka. The lake was once very clear, but since 1960 environmental pollution has progressed, and in 1969 the Soviet government enacted a special law on environmental protection. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996.

ロシア中南部，東部シベリアにある淡水の断層湖。湖面標高456m。北東〜南西に長さ636km，平均幅48km，面積３万1500km²。最大水深1741m（世界最深）。湖岸は大部分絶壁をなし，最大の島はオリホン島である。セレンガ川はじめ大小330以上の川が流入，流出はアンガラ川のみ。１〜５月間氷結。胎生魚ゴレミャンカ，バイカルアザラシなど多くの固有種が生息。オームリなどを漁獲。湖岸にイルクーツクがあり，リストビャンカに湖沼学研究所がある。かつては透明度の高い湖だったが1960年以降環境汚染が進み，1969年にソ連政府により環境保護に関する特別法が制定された。1996年世界自然遺産に登録。
