Simulating the behavior of chemical processes using a computer. Chemical processes are made up of many unit operation devices such as reactors and distillation columns, and simulation of each of these component devices is usually called process simulation. Both steady-state and dynamic behavior can be targeted, but for large, complex processes, simulating steady-state behavior is the primary concern. There are two types of steady-state simulation: operational and design. Operational simulation is a literal simulation in which the structure of each part of the equipment is specified and the aim is to find out what will happen when raw materials are flowed through it.

化学プロセスの挙動をコンピューターを使ってシミュレートすること。化学プロセスは反応器，蒸留塔など多くの単位操作装置から構成されるが，これら各要素装置のシミュレーションもふつうプロセスシミュレーションと呼ばれている。定常的挙動と動的挙動のいずれもが対象になるが，大きな複雑なプロセスでは，定常的挙動のシミュレーションがまず問題になる。定常状態のシミュレーションにも操作型と設計型との2種がある。操作型シミュレーションは，装置の各部の構造をすべて指定したうえで，そこに原料を流したらどうなるかを知ろうとするもので，文字どおりのシミュレーションである。
