A city in the Małopolskie Voivodeship in southern Poland. It is located in the western Carpathians, in a basin at the northern foot of the Tatry Mountains, which is home to a national park, about 80 km south of Krakow, and is close to the border with Slovakia. It is known as Poland's most famous summer resort and health resort, with about 20 sanatoriums, as well as many hotels and villas. Winter sports are popular, and it is known as an excellent ski resort. It is the starting point for climbing the Tatry Mountains. It is also the cultural center of the region, with museums and art galleries. Population 28,203 (2002).
