Abbreviation for "professional sport." The term "professional sport" is used in a broad sense, but generally refers to sports played as a profession. It is also the opposite of amateur sports. In Japan, in addition to baseball, sumo, golf, and boxing, the new professional soccer J-League was launched in May 1993, ushering in a wave of professionalization. Professional sports such as soccer, tennis, and cycling are popular in Europe, while golf, baseball, American football, basketball, and ice hockey are popular in the United States, with the soccer World Cup becoming the biggest event of all.
