A town in Nishiokitama County in the southwest of Yamagata Prefecture. The northern part is part of the Nagai Basin, through which the Yonezaka Line runs. The Shirakawa and Nogawa rivers are paddy fields. The Nakatsugawa area to the south is the broadleaf forest area of Mt. Iide. The town produces rice and beef cattle. 山形県南西部，西置賜(おきたま)郡の町。北部は長井盆地の一部で，米坂(よねさか)線が通じる。白川，野川の沿岸は水田地帯。南の中津川地区は飯豊山の広葉樹林地帯。米，肉牛を産する。木炭の生産量も多い。329.41km2。7943人（2010）。
