Octopus ocellatus (rice octopus)

Japanese: イイダコ(飯蛸) - イイダコ（英語表記）Octopus ocellatus

This octopus belongs to the Octopidae family of the Cephalopoda class (illustration). It is small, with a total length of about 30 cm. It has a body shape similar to that of the common octopus, with an egg-shaped body that is yellowish brown to blackish brown. The surface is covered with small granules and has intermittent black vertical lines. It has a square golden pattern on the back of the head between the eyes, and a golden ring pattern on the umbrella membrane just before the eyes. It spawns in winter, when it lays 200 to 600 eggs on shells that have fallen to the seabed, or in bottles or empty cans, which the mother octopus protects. The eggs hatch in 40 to 55 days and reach adulthood in one year.

頭足綱マダコ科のタコ（イラスト）。小型で全長約30cm。マダコとほぼ同じ体型で，胴は卵形で黄褐色から黒褐色。表面は小顆粒（しようかりゆう）で覆われているほか，断続する黒色の縦線がある。頭の背面，眼の間には四角い黄金紋があり，眼の直前の傘膜（さんまく）の上には金色の輪状紋があるのが特徴。産卵期は冬で，200～600個の卵を海底に落ちている貝殻，あるいは瓶や空缶の中に産みつけ母ダコが保護する。40～55日で孵化（ふか）し，1年で成体になる。
