A town in Akkeshi County, eastern Hokkaido. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the Nemuro Main Line runs through the town. Famous for its large kelp production. The main settlement is the fishing port of Kiritappu, overlooking Hama-naka Bay, and seafood processing is a thriving industry. In June 1993, the Kiritappu Marshland was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 423.63 km2 . Population: 6,511 (2010). 北海道東部,厚岸(あっけし)郡の町。太平洋に面し,根室本線が通じる。コンブの大産地として有名。中心集落は浜中湾に臨む漁港霧多布(きりたっぷ)で,水産加工が盛ん。1993年6月に霧多布湿原がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。423.63km2。6511人(2010)。
