Karatsu Domain

A domain located in Matsuura, Hizen Province (Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture). All domain lords except for the Terazawa clan were Fudai. In 1587 (Tensho 15), Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted the Hata clan's former territory of the Kamimatsuura region, but in 1593 (Bunroku 2), he confiscated it and gave the remaining land, 63,000 koku, to Terazawa Hirotaka. The Terazawa clan also held 20,000 koku in Izumi County, Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture), but later received an additional 40,000 koku in Amakusa as recognition for their achievements in the Battle of Sekigahara. In 1614 (Keicho 19), they exchanged their territories for Ito County, Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), and Izumi County, becoming a feudal lord with 123,000 koku in Matsuura, Amakusa, and Ito County. In a general land survey in 1616 (Genwa 2), their kokudaka was increased to over 150,700 koku. After the Shimabara Rebellion in 1637 (Kan'ei 14), their Amakusa territory was confiscated, and in 1644 (Shoho 1), the clan became an heirless family with the suicide of its lord, Katataka, and their territory temporarily became the property of the shogunate. After that, in 1649 (Keian 2), Okubo Tadamoto (fudai) entered the domain from Akashi, Harima (Hyogo Prefecture), and established a new domain with a fief of 83,000 koku. In 1674 (Enpo 2), there were changes to agricultural policy, such as the implementation of a system of village transfer for village headmen, but in 1678, the second lord Tadatomo was transferred to Sakura, Shimousa (Chiba Prefecture), and Matsudaira Norihisa entered the domain from the same place and was given a fief of 70,000 koku. The Matsudaira clan continued in Noriharu and Norimura, but in 1691 (Genroku 4), they moved to Toba, Shima (Mie Prefecture), and Doi Toshishi entered the domain from the same place. The Doi clan ruled the Karatsu domain for over 80 years, during which time they invited Confucian scholar Yoshitake Houmei and established a prosperous local school, but in 1762 (Horeki 12) they were transferred to Koga in Shimousa (Ibaraki Prefecture). After the Doi clan, Mizuno Tadato, lord of Okazaki in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture), succeeded him and was given a fief of 60,000 koku, but during the reign of Tadakuni, 10,000 koku was donated to the shogunate, and in 1817 (Bunka 14) the fief was transferred to Hamamatsu in Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture), and Ogasawara Nagamasa entered the domain from Tanagura in Mutsu (Fukushima Prefecture), and the Ogasawara clan ruled the domain from then until the Meiji period. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the feudal domain was abolished, and the prefectures of Karatsu, Imari, Saga, Mituma, and Nagasaki were separated, before being incorporated into Saga Prefecture, which was re-established in 1883.
