橋脚，ビルなどの一般的な基礎の一つ。土木の分野では，鉄筋コンクリート，鋼材，木材などで筒状の構造物（ピアpier）をつくり，内部の土砂を掘削して，自重および上載荷重を加えて必要な深さまで沈め，必要があれば内部をコンクリートなどで充てんしたものをいう。建築では地盤に掘ったたて孔にコンクリートを打ち込んで杭としたものをいう。
