Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed on March 3, 1918 by the Lenin government, which was established as a result of the Russian Revolution in 1917, with Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bulgaria, and Turkey. It is particularly famous for being the first treaty signed by the Soviet state, the predecessor of the Soviet Union, for pursuing the aims of the Russian Revolution, such as open diplomacy, a complete democratic peace, a European revolution, and the right of self-determination for peoples, and for ultimately being forced to accept a separate peace treaty proposal on the terms presented by the four Central European countries, which not only led to the withdrawal of the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, which had formed a coalition government, but also brought about an unprecedented crisis of division within the Bolshevik Party.

1917年のロシア革命で成立したレーニン政権が，18年3月3日にドイツ，オーストリア･ハンガリー二重帝国，ブルガリア，トルコとブレスト･リトフスクで締結した講和条約。ソ連邦の前身であるソビエト国家が初めて結んだ条約であること，交渉においてソビエト側が公開外交，全面民主講和，ヨーロッパの革命，民族自決権などの一連のロシア革命の目的を追求したこと，最終的に中欧4国側の提示する条件での単独講和条約案を受諾することを余儀なくされ，連立政権を構成していた左派エス･エル党の離脱のみならず，ボリシェビキ党内に未曾有の分裂の危機を招いたことなどで特に有名である。
