Kise Sanshi

A waka scholar in the early Edo period. He was also known as Masafusa or Zuisen, and went by the pen name Chikurinsai. He lived in Yamashina, Kyoto, and later moved to Otsu. He was a disciple of Satomura Shotaku, author of Ruiji Meisho Wakashu. Although no of Sanno's writings remain in a complete form, his theories can be found in Keichu's Manyo Daishouki, Imai Nikan's Shosetsuroku, and the Nikan Kakiirebon Manyoshu. Although he does not occupy as important a place in the history of waka studies as Shimokobe Choryu, he was ahead of Choryu and Toda Mosui in rejecting courtly waka studies and freely criticizing the Manyoshu, which suggests the momentum of a new era.

江戸初期の歌学者。正房、随宣ともいい、竹林斎と号した。京都山科(やましな)に住み、のちに大津に移った。『類字名所和歌集』の著者里村昌琢(しょうたく)の門人。三之自身の著書はまとまった形で残っていないが、契沖(けいちゅう)の『万葉代匠記(だいしょうき)』や、今井似閑(じかん)の編になる『諸説録』、および似閑書入(かきいれ)本『万葉集』に、その説をみることができる。和歌研究史上に下河辺長流(しもこうべちょうりゅう)ほど重要な位置を占めてはいないが、長流、戸田茂睡(もすい)らに先んじて、堂上(とうしょう)歌学を排斥し、『万葉集』を自由に批評している点に新時代の機運を感じさせる。
