Luis Carlos Prestes

Luis Carlos Prestes

Brazilian revolutionary. Born in Rio Grande do Sul, he graduated from the military academy. In the 1920s, he joined the junior officers' reform movement (Tenentismo) and led the liberation army in marches across the country, earning him the nickname "Knight of Hope." He later visited the Soviet Union, and in 1935 was elected to the Executive Committee of Comintern. He returned to Brazil and led a revolt by the National Liberation League against fascism and the Vargas regime, for which he was arrested. In 1945, he rebuilt the Communist Party and was elected to the Senate, but two years later the party was outlawed and he was forced to go underground. After the military coup of 1964, he went into exile in France for a time, but continued to demonstrate hidden leadership, such as by trying to infiltrate Communist forces into the quasi-opposition Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB).
