Uoshima [Village] - Uoshima

Japanese: 魚島[村] - うおしま

A village in Ochi County, northeastern Ehime Prefecture. Population 351 (1995). Located in the center of Hiuchi Nada, it consists of Uoshima, Takaigamishima, the uninhabited island of Enoshima, and its subordinate islands. Uoshima was formerly called Okishima, but since the Genroku period (1688-1704) it has been called Uoshima. As it is isolated from the mainland and other islands, there are no noteworthy industries other than fishing. During the feudal era, sea bream fishing was popular, and before World War II, the town also went out to fish in Korean waters, but in recent years fishing has become smaller in scale, and aquaculture of seaweed, sea bream, etc. is active.

愛媛県北東部，越智（おち）郡の村。人口351(1995)。燧（ひうち）灘の中央部に位置する魚島，高井神島と無人島の江ノ島および属島からなる。魚島は古くは沖島と呼ばれたが，元禄期(1688‐1704)以降，魚島と称するようになる。本土や他の島嶼（とうしよ）から隔絶しているため，漁業以外見るべき産業はない。藩政時代にはタイ漁が盛んで，第2次世界大戦前には朝鮮海域にも出漁したが，近年出漁は小規模化し，ノリ，タイなどの養殖漁業が活発である。
