〘 noun 〙 A horse-drawn carriage in which many people ride together. It usually ran on a fixed route for a fixed fare. In Tokyo, stagecoaches began in 1872 ( Meiji 5), and the groom blew a trumpet to warn pedestrians. They were also called Entaro carriages. After the horse-drawn railway carriages began in the same year, they gradually declined. 〘名〙 多人数がいっしょに乗る馬車。ふつう、一定の路線を一定の料金をとって走った。明治五年(一八七二)に始まる東京の乗合馬車は、馬丁がラッパを吹いて行人に注意をうながした。円太郎馬車とも呼ばれる。同一五年に鉄道馬車が開業してからは、次第に衰滅。乗合。※新聞雑誌‐三九号・明治五年(1872)四月「其外江ノ島鎌倉等へ乗合馬車を仕立」
