The secondary enrichment zone is a zone where the metal components in ore exposed on the surface are leached by rainwater, move downward, and are reprecipitated below the groundwater level, resulting in a higher grade than the original ore. It is often found in copper and silver sulfide deposits in arid regions. For this process to produce large amounts of high-grade ore, a stable groundwater table with little groundwater movement and a slow rate of erosion are required. Therefore, secondary enrichment zones are often developed in arid and semi-arid regions. This process is particularly important in low-grade deposits, and in porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States and South America, only the secondary enrichment zone was once the target of mining.
