Born: March 26, 1832 in Landau Died November 25, 1915. French linguist in Paris. He taught comparative linguistics at the Collège de France and was one of the people who built the foundations of comparative linguistics in France. He specialized in Italic languages, and left behind research in mythology in addition to linguistics. He proposed an independent field that studies the meaning of language, especially its changes, and gave it the name "sémantique". His main work is Essai de sémantique (1897).
