Amanu [island] - Amanu

Japanese: アマヌ[島] - あまぬ
Amanu [island] - Amanu

...There are many marae (stone religious ruins) and they are of archaeological interest, but the marae remaining in the east show similarities with those in Hawaii and the interior of Tahiti, and are different from those in the Tonga and Samoa islands. In 1929, four cannons covered with coral were discovered on Amanu Island. Australian historian Landon R. Langdon believes that these cannons belong to the Spanish fast sailing ship San Lesmes, which was wrecked in this area in 1526, and claims that the survivors of the ship married Polynesian women and spread to the Polynesian islands including New Zealand and Easter Island, exerting a great cultural influence. Magellan was the first to "discover" Tuamotu in 1521, and many navigators such as Quiros, Schouten, and Cook have visited the islands since then.
