In 1929, four cannons covered with coral were discovered on Amanu Island. Australian historian Landon R. Langdon believes that these cannons belong to the Spanish fast sailing ship San Lesmes, which was wrecked in this area in 1526, and claims that the survivors of the ship married Polynesian women and spread to the Polynesian islands including New Zealand and Easter Island, exerting a great cultural influence.
