A peace treaty was concluded between France and Austria on October 7, 1797. Campo Formio is the name of a small village in Italy. It was proposed by Napoleon, who had been defeating the Austrian army in various parts of Northern Italy since the spring of 1796, and was signed between the two countries. As a result, Austria retained Venice, but abandoned Lombardy. France retained the Ionian Islands and the Netherlands, and was also promised to secure the land on the left bank of the Rhine. However, when Napoleon launched his Egyptian campaign in 1798, Russia, Austria, and other countries joined the Second Coalition proposed by Britain, and France was at a disadvantage on the Rhine front. As a result, the treaty naturally lost its effectiveness, and the two countries entered a state of war again.
