〘Noun〙 (also "kyoden") 1. The words of teachings preached by the Buddha. Also, the book in which they are written down. Buddhist scriptures. Sutras. Inner scriptures. Sutra teachings. *Shoku Nihongi - October 16th year of Tenpyo (744) " A messenger travels to Tang China to read two sutras and two or three treatises on the most refined texts" [Amitabha Sutra - Part 1] 2. In religions in general, a sacred book that shows the teachings and rules that its followers should follow. Also, those teachings and rules. Something like the Christian Bible or the Islamic Koran. Sutras. Holy scriptures. *Kontemtusmundi (Records of the Sacred World) (1596) 2 "Qiǒdẽni (kyaudenni) miyuru gotoku" [Additional note] When referring to sutras (keisho) , it is read as "keiten." →keiten (scripture)

〘Noun〙 (meaning a book containing rules and principles that have remained unchanged for all ages) 1. Books such as the "Four Books," "Five Classics," and "Thirteen Classics" written by ancient Chinese saints and wise men. Classics (keisho) . ※Kokin Chomonshu (1254) 4 "In the 15th year of the reign of Emperor Ojin, a scholar brought the scriptures from Baekje" [Han Shu - Sun Bao] 2. ⇒ Kyoten (Scriptures) [Additional note] When referring to Buddhist scriptures or sutras, it is read as "kyoten."

〘名〙 (万世にわたって変わらない法式と道理を書いた書物の意)① 古代中国の聖人、賢人のあらわした「四書」「五経」「十三経」などの書物。経書(けいしょ)。※古今著聞集(1254)四「応神天皇十五年に、百済国より、博士、経典を相具してきたる」 〔漢書‐孫宝〕② ⇒きょうてん(経典)[補注]仏典、経文をいう場合は「きょうてん」と読む。
