…Years of birth and death unknown. He was named after his birthplace of Ghent, but his real name was Joos van Wassenhove. He was registered as a free master in Antwerp in 1460 and in Ghent in 1464.

…Van der Weyden painted an altarpiece for the Medici family in Florence during his trip to Italy in 1450, and in the 1470s van der Goes brought the Portinari Altarpiece to Florence, where it caused a sensation. The Kingdom of Naples also collected Flemish paintings, and Joos van Wassenhove (c. 1435-c. 1480), a native of Ghent, served at the court of Urbino. Thus, in the second half of the 15th century, oil painting techniques, landscape depictions with skillful light expression and color (atmospheric) perspective, and the three-quarter front portrait format that conveys the lively presence of the model were introduced to Italy. …
