These French-style ornament agréments became widespread in Baroque music in general, and they also had a strong influence on the famous ornament chart at the beginning of JS Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier. However, as Bach also suggests in his work, the ornamental patterns indicated by these symbols are not definitive, and in some cases they simply indicate a type, and in many cases several different symbols were used to indicate a particular musical pattern. …
