Pieter Pourbus

Flemish painter. Born in Gouda. Registered as a free master in Bruges in 1543, he became elder of the painters' guild in 1569. Influenced by Memling and David, who were active in Bruges in the 15th century, he excelled in meticulous portraits and religious paintings, but also devoted himself to Italian Renaissance-style narrative and allegorical genre paintings (such as "The Feast of Love"). He was also a surveyor and cartographer, and created maps of Bruges and its surrounding areas for the city council and a map showing the depth of the seabed for Charles V.

フランドルの画家。ハウダ生れ。1543年ブリュージュで自由親方に登録，69年画家組合の長老となる。15世紀に同地で活躍したメムリンクやダーフィトの影響をうけ，緻密な筆致による肖像画や宗教画を得意としたほか，イタリア･ルネサンス風の物語的･寓意的風俗画(《愛の祝宴》など)にも傾注する。測量技師，地図製作者でもあった彼は市参事会のためにブリュージュおよび周辺の地図を，カール5世のために海底の深度を示す地図を作成。
