1819‐91 Ottoman politician and man of letters. The son of a diplomat, he served as the first Speaker of the National Assembly and Prime Minister after serving as a diplomat himself. However, he is better known as a man of letters for his many translations and adaptations of Molière's works, as well as his translation of Fenelon's The Adventures of Telemaque. Furthermore, in his Ottoman Dictionary, he was the first to place Ottoman among the Turkish languages, playing a major role in the birth of Turkish nationalism.
