Died January 20, 1901. Bois-Colombes. Belgian electrical engineer. In 1856, he joined an electrical equipment factory in Paris, where he invented and improved various electrical devices. In 1869, he invented the direct current generator, and in 1871 presented a prototype (the Gram Dynamo) to the French Academy of Sciences. He later established a generator manufacturing factory. During a demonstration of the Gram Dynamo at the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, he famously discovered by chance that the generator could also function as an electric motor. He made a significant contribution to the subsequent development of the electrical industry.

A unit of mass. The symbol g. It is the base unit in the CGS system, but in the SI system the kilogram is the base unit, and g represents one thousandth of that mass. Note, however, that even in the SI system, mass units that are integer powers of 10 are expressed by adding a prefix to g. For example, 10 ⁶ g is expressed as 1 Mg. The unit name comes from the Greek word grama (small stone weight).

ベルギーの電気技師。 1856年，パリの電気器械工場に入り，さまざまな電気機器の考案，改良を手がけた。 69年に直流発電機を考案，71年フランス科学アカデミーに試作品 (グラム・ダイナモ) を提出。のちに発電機製造工場を設立。 73年のウィーン万国博覧会でのグラム・ダイナモの実演中，偶然発電機が電動機としても作動することを発見した話は有名。その後の電気産業の発展に重大な寄与をなした。

質量の単位。記号はg。CGS単位系では基本単位であるが，SIではキログラムが基本単位であって，その 1000分の1の質量を表わす。ただし SIでも，質量の単位の 10の整数乗倍の名称はgに接頭語をつけて表わすので注意を要する。たとえば 10⁶g は 1Mgで表わす。単位名はギリシア語のグラマ (小さなおもり石) に由来する。
