In China, the stage of a theater. During the Tang dynasty, theaters where various performing arts were performed were concentrated in or around large temples, but in the Song dynasty, they were permanently installed in urban entertainment districts, some of which were so large that they could accommodate several thousand people and were called kouran (railed). A miniature of a tomb discovered in Shanxi Province in 1959 demonstrated that a square stage was surrounded by a railing and separated from the audience seating. Also, during the Yuan dynasty, touring troupes set up play stages in temples or built huts in vacant lots, a style that continues to this day.
