A Taisho and Showa era aesthetician. Born in Tokyo. Majored in aesthetics at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo, and received a silver watch upon graduation in 1913 (Taisho 2). He then entered graduate school, and was appointed lecturer at the university in 1922 and assistant professor in 1927 (Showa 2). From that year to the following year, 1928, he studied abroad in Germany, France, and Italy. From 1929, he was in charge of the first aesthetics and art history course at the Faculty of Letters, lecturing on aesthetics, and in 1930 he became a doctor of literature and a professor. In 1946 (Showa 21), he became a member of the Imperial Academy, and retired in 1949. His major works include "Yugen to Aware" (1939), "Fugaron" (1940), and "Shizen Kanjyo no Man'yoshu" (1943).
