A stratum in which iron oxide and silicate minerals are deposited in stripes. It is believed that when photosynthesis by blue-green algae began in the Precambrian era, oxygen dissolved in the previously anoxic seawater, causing large amounts of iron ions to oxidize and precipitate on the seafloor. It is also known that large-scale banded iron deposits were formed 700 million years ago at the end of the Proterozoic era. The cause of the latter is explained by the Snowball Earth hypothesis, which states that there was a time when the entire surface of the Earth was covered with ice sheets up to the equator, when the oceans froze and the seawater became anoxic, and then when the ice disappeared, oxygen from the atmosphere dissolved again in the ocean, forming iron oxide, which was deposited in stripes. 酸化鉄とケイ酸塩鉱物が縞状に堆積した地層。先カンブリア時代の藍藻による光合成が始まり、それまで無酸素状態だった海水に酸素が溶け込み、大量の鉄イオンが酸化されて海底に沈殿したものと考えられている。また、原生代末期の7億年前にも大規模な縞状鉄鉱層が生成したことがわかっている。後者の原因は、地球表面全体が赤道付近にいたるまで氷床に覆われた時代があったというスノーボールアース仮説によると、海洋が凍結して海水が無酸素状態になり、その後、氷が消滅して再び大気中の酸素が海洋に溶け込んで酸化鉄が生成し、縞状に堆積したものであると説明される。縞状鉄鉱床。BIF（banded iron formation）。
