A port town in British Columbia, western Canada. Population 16,620 (1991). Located near the mouth of the Skeena River, on the northernmost fjord coast of the Pacific coast, it is known for its excellent harbor for handling timber and marine products. A transcontinental railroad (Canadian National Railway) opened in 1914. It is the western terminus of Highway 16 and the southern terminus of ferries from Alaska, making it a key transportation hub.
