Japanese: 連事 - つらね

A type of medieval ennen art form. Also called "renji." A performance in which the origin of a story is explained at length in words. Based on historical events from Japan and China, two or three performers repeat the dialogue and songs. Its simple structure is said to be related to sarugaku, as the name "rensarugaku" is also found in ennen. Kabuki also has an eloquence technique called "tsurane." A representative example is the long monologue delivered on the hanamichi by the protagonist in "Shibaraku," one of the Kabuki plays. Other examples of "tsurane" are "watari serifu," in which several people share the responsibility of delivering beautiful lines, and the long, elegant lines in the works of Kawatake Mokuami.

中世の延年芸能の一種。「れんじ」ともいう。事の由来を言葉で長々と述べる芸。和漢の故事を題材とし，2，3人の演者が問答や歌で連ねる。その素朴な構成は，延年に連猿楽という名称もみられるところから，猿楽と関連があるとされる。歌舞伎にも「つらね」という雄弁術がある。歌舞伎十八番の『暫 (しばらく) 』の主人公が花道で述べる長い独白がその代表的なもの。美文調のせりふを，何人かで分担して述べる「渡りぜりふ」や，河竹黙阿弥の作品にある長い名調子のせりふなども，この「つらね」の変形とみられる。
