Porcelain produced at the Vienna Porcelain Factory between 1719 and 1864. It has the second oldest tradition in Europe after Germany's Meissen porcelain. It began when the Dutchman du Paquier succeeded in producing porcelain with the help of two craftsmen he recruited from the Meissen factory. The oldest surviving piece is dated May 3, 1719. In 1744, the factory was purchased by the Austrian government and became the Royal Porcelain Factory. Starting out with Meissen-style porcelain, they later created a new style called Schwarzrott, featuring realistic animal and landscape motifs painted in solid black, as well as producing excellent porcelain in the Rococo and Classical styles, enhancing the reputation of Vienna porcelain.
