Windsor chair

Japanese: ウィンザー･チェア（英語表記）Windsor chair

These simple chairs were made on a lathe by local English turners in the late 17th century. They were primarily used in the living rooms and dining rooms of the country estates and townhouses of the landed gentry, but by the 18th century their design had become more refined and they were also popular in the lobbies and offices of inns, and in the kitchens and servants' rooms of upper-class families in big cities, winning great popularity as a chair for the common people. They were brought to America in the 1720s, where their simple, practical design suited the colonial lifestyle and became extremely popular.

17世紀後期にイングランドの地方の挽物師（ひきものし）たちが製作したろくろ加工による素朴ないす。主として田舎の地主階級の邸宅や町家の居間や食堂で使われていたが，18世紀になるとその形態も整って旅館のロビーやオフィス，大都市の上流家庭の台所や召使い部屋でも流行し，庶民のいすとして多くの支持を受けた。1720年代にはアメリカにも渡り，このいすの簡素で実用的な形態が植民地の生活様式に適合して，非常な流行をもたらした。
