Vermilion (English spelling)

It occurs naturally as cinnabar. It is a red pigment that has been used since before the Common Era. It is also called vermilion. It is made of mercury (II) sulfide HgS, but in recent years it has been replaced by cadmium red Cd(SSe) and molybdenum red (chrome vermilion) Pb(CrMo) _O4 , and its uses have become limited. Therefore, vermilion is often confused with chrome vermilion, so it is better to call it vermilion. When sodium sulfide _Na2S is added to a soluble mercury salt, the black precipitate HgS is formed, and the desired product is obtained by stirring it in ammonia water for about a day and a night, which changes the color to vermilion. In Japan, it is most commonly used to color lacquer, and some are also used to color vermilion ink, color plastics, and in oil paints, where its unique red color is prized. It can also be used as a solid solution of cadmium mercury sulfide (CdHg)S to adjust the color.

天然には辰砂(しんしゃ)として産する。紀元前から使用されていた赤色顔料。水銀朱ともいう。硫化水銀（Ⅱ）HgSからできているが、最近ではカドミウムレッドCd(SSe)やモリブデンレッド（クロムバーミリオン）Pb(CrMo)O₄などで置き換えられ、用途は狭くなっている。したがって、バーミリオンというとこのクロムバーミリオンと混同されるので、朱とよぶほうがよい。可溶性の水銀塩に硫化ナトリウムNa₂Sなどを加え、生成した黒色の沈殿HgSを、アンモニア水中で、約一昼夜攪拌(かくはん)すると朱色に変色し、目的物が得られる。日本では漆の着色にもっとも多く使用され、また、一部は朱肉、プラスチックの着色、あるいは独得の赤の色調が珍重され油絵の具に使用されている。硫化水銀カドミウム(CdHg)Sの固溶体として、色調を調節することもある。
