A summer-green annual weed of the family Garlicaceae, commonly found in farmland and roadsides near human settlements (illustration). It is widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of Asia, including Korea, China, Malaysia, and India, and in Japan it is found from Honshu to Kyushu. It is entirely hairless. The stems are brown, delicate, well-branched, and 10-20 cm tall. It has 3-5 glossy, oblanceolate leaves arranged in whorls. From July to October, numerous small, yellowish-brown flowers form inflorescences at the ends of the branches, and the fruit is a spherical capsule. It is called pomegranate because the leaves and fruit are reminiscent of pomegranates. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
