1138‐93 The first Ayyubid ruler. Reigned 1169-93. A Kurd born in Takrit in central Iraq, he lived in Damascus from 1154 and served under Nur al-Din of the Zengid dynasty. In 1169 he became the vizier of the Fatimid dynasty and established real power in Egypt. After Nur al-Din's death in 1174, he expanded his territory from Syria to Jazira and established a system of siege against the Crusaders.
