A full-length epic poem by Swedish poet Tegnér, published in 1825. It is his masterpiece and took five years to complete. Inspired by the ancient Icelandic saga of the same name, it sings of the life of an ancient Nordic hero, the struggles and revenge between clans, and the love story between Frittijof and Ingeborg. Goethe praised it highly, and Longfellow translated it, earning it high praise overseas. However, the author's activities as a poet stagnated after the publication of this work. [Tanaka Michio]

スウェーデンの詩人テグネールの長編叙事詩，1825年刊。彼の代表作で完成まで5年の歳月を要した。同名の古代アイスランド･サガに想を得て，古代北欧の英雄の生涯，氏族間の闘争と復讐に，フリティヨフとインゲボリとの愛の経緯をちりばめて歌い上げたもの。ゲーテはこれを激賞し，ロングフェローは翻訳をするなど海外でも高い評価を得た。しかし作者自身はこの作品発表後，詩人としての活動は停滞した。【田中三千夫】
