Kotoite (English spelling)

Kotoite (English spelling)

A borate mineral. It occurs in the contact zone of dolomite and is formed by the supply of boron (B) from granite. It was discovered in 1939 (Showa 14) by Takeo Watanabe (1907-1986) in the Horkhor Mine in North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and Rézbánya in Romania. Watanabe also discovered it in Japan at the Neichi Mine (closed) in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture. It occurs together with calcite and other borate minerals. It does not form euhedral crystals, but instead occurs as granular crystals buried in calcite. It dissolves in nitric acid. It was named after the geologist Bunjiro Kodo, who first investigated the Horkhor Mine.
