Also called "Monji." In the Middle Ages, this samurai family had influence in the Moji area, located at the northern tip of Kyushu. It is said to have begun in 1244 (Kangen 2), when Fujiwara no Chikafusa, a retainer of the shogunate, was granted six Moji territories. They were originally called the Shimousa clan. As a key transportation point, Mojiseki became the territory of the regent Hojo clan, and the Shimousa clan was its vassal. After the Northern and Southern Courts period, the area became more indigenous and came to be called the Moji clan. Ikawa, Yanagi, Ozumi, Katano, Kusuhara, and Yoshishi are known as the Moji Rokkago, and the Moji clan was divided into these six families. During the turmoil of the Northern and Southern Courts, Chikayori of the Ikawa lineage was based in Sarugaku Castle and fought on the side of the Southern Court's Imperial Court, while Chikasuke of the Katano lineage was based in Mojiseki Castle and fought on the side of the Northern Court's samurai.
