A student movement that sparked the American student rebellion of the late 1960s. In September 1964, at the University of California, Berkeley, the university authorities announced a policy to restrict student political activity. In opposition to this, student groups on campus formed a loose alliance and formed the Free Speech Movement (FSM). In the course of the movement, the university authorities were exposed as oppressors of students who had no rights, and the students, who demanded student participation in decision-making bodies in order to gain rights, sharply criticized the "bureaucratic organization lacking personality and sensitivity" of the "university that had become a knowledge factory."

1960年代後半におけるアメリカの学生反乱の口火を切った学生運動。1964年9月カリフォルニア大学バークリー校で，大学当局が学生の政治活動を規制する方針を告示したのに対し，学内の学生諸団体はこれに反対してゆるやかな連合を組みフリースピーチ･ムーブメント(FSM)を結成した。運動の過程で大学当局は無権利状態の学生に対して圧制者であることが暴露され，権利の獲得のために決定機関への学生参加を要求した学生たちは，〈知識工場と化した大学〉の〈人格性と感応性を欠いた官僚機構〉を鋭く追及した。
