An old town in Koka District, at the southern tip of Shiga Prefecture. The central settlement is along the Soma River, a tributary of the Yasu River, and the Kusatsu Line runs through it. Rice and dairy farming were the main agricultural industries in the area, but in recent years housing development has progressed and factories have been established here. In October 2004, it merged with the towns of Minakuchi, Tsuchiyama, Koka, and Shigaraki in Koka District to form Koka City. 49.65 km2 . Population: 20,334 (2003).
