A city in the mid-west of Nara Prefecture. It borders Wakayama Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture to the west. In 1957, Gojo-cho, Nohara-cho, and the six villages of Oada, Minamiada, Uchi, Kitauchi, Makino, and Sakaibe were merged to form a city. In 1984, Minamiuchi Village was incorporated to make the entire former Uchi District part of the city. Population: 35,734 (1995). The Kongo Mountains are to the north and the Yoshino Mountains to the south. The Yoshino River (Kinokawa River) flows west through the center, with four to five river terraces on both banks. The old Gojo-cho, which sits on these terraces, has long been a strategic location with transportation routes connecting it in all directions, and developed as a road town.
