French West Africa - Afrique Occidentale Française

A former large French colony in West Africa. Abbreviated as AOF. The area currently consists of eight French-speaking countries: Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Formed as a federation of French colonies, it was centrally governed by a governorate in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

During the division of the African continent from the 1880s to the 1890s, France expanded its influence inland from its bases on the coast of West Africa, establishing the colonies of Senegal, Guinea, Sudan (now Mali), and Côte d'Ivoire. In 1895, France decided to unify these colonies, and in 1899 Dahomey (now Benin) was added, and in 1904, by government decree, French West Africa was officially established. After World War I, new French territories in the Sahel region, such as Mauritania and Niger, were added, making the total territory a vast 4.5 million square kilometers. Starting with Guinea in 1958, each colony achieved independence separately as a country. However, all countries except Guinea and Mauritania have maintained close economic ties, such as joining the Monetary Union of the Ordinance of the Union of Mongolia (UMOA) and using the common currency from the colonial era, the CFA franc.

西アフリカにあったかつてのフランスの大植民地。略称AOF。現在のモーリタニア、セネガル、ギニア、コートジボワール、ベナン、マリ、ブルキナ・ファソ、ニジェールのフランス語圏8か国が占める地域をいう。フランス領の植民地の連合体として形成され、セネガルの首都ダカールに置かれた総督府によって一元的に統治されていた。

　1880年代から1890年代にかけてのアフリカ大陸分割の時期、フランスは、西アフリカ沿岸部の各拠点を足場に内陸部に勢力を伸ばし、セネガル、ギニア、スーダン（現マリ）、コートジボワールの各植民地を建設した。1895年、フランスはこれらの植民地を統一的に治めることを決定し、1899年にはダオメー（現ベナン）もこれに加え、1904年の政令により、フランス領西アフリカは正式に発足した。第一次世界大戦後、新たにモーリタニア、ニジェールなどサヘル地域のフランス領が加えられ、全領土は450万平方キロメートルという広大なものとなった。独立に際しては、1958年のギニアを皮切りに、各植民地はそれぞれ一国として、別個に独立を達成した。しかし、ギニア、モーリタニアを除く諸国は、通貨同盟（UMOA）に加盟し、植民地時代からの共通通貨であるCFAフランを使用するなど、経済的には緊密な関係を維持している。
