Born: December 4, 1892, El Ferrol, Galicia [Died] November 20, 1975, Madrid. Spanish soldier and politician. Born into a family of naval paymasters, he graduated from the military academy in 1910 and played an active role in suppressing the rebellion in Morocco in 1925. After the establishment of the Republic in 1931, he was appointed Chief of Staff from 1935 to 1936. He was demoted by the Popular Front government established in February 1936, and in July he staged a coup to overthrow the Popular Front government in Spanish Morocco, sparking the Spanish Civil War. In October of the same year, he became the head of the government and commander-in-chief of the rebels, and with the end of the civil war in March 1939, he consolidated his dictatorial power. After World War II, he declared the restoration of the monarchy, and secured his position as head of state for life, solidifying his dictatorial regime. In July 1969, he appointed Prince Don Juan Carlos, grandson of Alfonso XIII, as king, and declared himself his guardian. In June 1973, he separated the roles of Head of State and Prime Minister, handing the position of Prime Minister over to Vice President C. Branco. In October 1975, he suffered a heart attack due to influenza, and after a month of critical illness, he passed away. He was said to have had an incredible vitality.
