Northern fur seal (English spelling)

Japanese: オットセイ(膃肭臍) - オットセイ（英語表記）northern fur seal

A mammal of the family Otariidae (pinnipedidae) (illustration). The southern fur seal is sometimes also referred to as fur seal. In this case, this species is called the northern fur seal to distinguish it from the southern fur seal. It has a short, pointed snout, relatively long ears, and long hind legs. It has dense fur and a lot of underhair. The underhair layer is impermeable to water and creates a layer of air that provides insulation. When wet, its body color appears black, but when dry, young individuals are silvery gray, and older adults are grayish reddish brown.

鰭脚（ききやく）目アシカ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。ミナミオットセイ類も含めてオットセイと総称することもある。この場合，本種をミナミオットセイと区別するためキタオットセイと呼ぶ。短くとがった吻（ふん）と比較的長い耳介や長い後肢を有する。毛は密生し，下毛も多く生える。下毛層は水を通さず，空気の膜をつくり断熱効果がある。体色はぬれているときは黒く見えるが，乾くと，若い個体は銀灰色，成老獣では灰赤褐色を呈す。
