Tengusukeba (English spelling) long-nosed planthoppers

Japanese: テングスケバ - てんぐすけば(英語表記)long-nosed planthoppers
Tengusukeba (English spelling) long-nosed planthoppers

A general term for insects in the order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera, family Dictyopharidae, or a type of insect in the family. Insects in this family are 5 to 15 millimeters long, and most have a protrusion on their head that extends forward. Their wings are transparent, but they may have large dark patterns. There are about 450 known species in the world, mainly in tropical regions, and about five species are known to be native to Japan.

The Tengusukeba Dictyophara patruelis is 10-13 mm long, light green in colour, and has a head that protrudes strongly forward. It has four orange stripes on its thorax and back. Its wings are transparent. It inhabits grasses and is often found on mulberry, sugarcane and rice. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan and the Korean Peninsula. The closely related Nakano Tengusukeba D. nakanonis was discovered in Nakano, Tokyo and is said to inhabit oak trees, but its numbers seem to be small. Other known species include the Tsumagurosukeba Orthopagus lunulifer, which is common on Mallotus jasmine, and the Kuro Tengusukeba Saigona ishidai, which is found on willows and alders in mountainous areas.
