A short-tailed shrew commonly found in the forests and shrubs of eastern North America. It is known as the only mammal whose saliva contains a toxic substance that is effective in capturing and defending prey. It is in the order Insectivore and the family Soricidae. It is large and sturdy for a shrew. It has short limbs and velvety fur. Its ears are small. The upper side of its body is gray-black and the underside is gray. Like other shrews, the tips of its teeth are a conspicuous red color. Males have a particularly strong musky odor. Its body length is 7.8-10.4 cm, its tail length is 1.7-3 cm, and it weighs 12-23 g.
