1523‐71 He was the bishop of the Czech Brethren and an educational reformer. He studied at the University of Wittenberg and was influenced by Luther and Melanchthon. He tried to obtain official recognition of the Czech Brethren based on the Augsburg Confession (1530). He was an accomplished musician and wrote the first Bohemian music theory book, Musica (1558). He also wrote the first Czech grammar (1571) and standardized the written language. He also translated the New Testament. His translation of the Bible in one volume and the Czech translation of the Old Testament in five volumes by the Czech Brethren after his death were combined to form the six-volume so-called Kralická bible.
