Ando Seian

Japanese: 安東省庵 - あんどうせいあん
Ando Seian

A Confucian scholar from the Yanagawa Domain in Chikugo Province (Fukuoka Prefecture) in the early Edo period. Born on January 18, 1612. His given name was Morinari. His pen names were Romoku and Shiboku, and his other name was Chisai. He studied in Kyoto under Matsunaga Sekigo, and after returning to Japan, he served the domain's lord as a tutor. When the Ming Confucian scholar Zhu Shunshui fled to Nagasaki with the establishment of the Qing Dynasty in China, Morinari was one of the first to admire Zhu's academic virtues, and studied under him, forming a close friendship in which they enjoyed learning together. He helped Shunsui, who was in poverty abroad, by giving half of his meager salary to him, despite the ridicule he received from those around him. His noble virtue and learning made him famous, and he was known as the "great Confucian scholar of Kansai." He died on October 20, 1704, at the age of 80. His books include "Seian Sensei Ishu" (Collection of the Master's Works), 12 volumes, and "Chisai Manroku."
